Severe depression can be debilitating. When an individual suffers from depression, they may be unable to work for an extended period of time. Long-term disability benefits may help sufferers of depression who are going through treatment and/or are unable to work because of their condition.

Sometimes, patients with depression do not have relief using traditional prescription antidepressant drugs. According to a new study, SAMe, a popular dietary supplement used in Europe, may help sufferers of depression.

SAMe, which stands for S-adenosyl methionine, is used to treat not only depression but arthritis and other types of ailments. Research being done at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital indicates newly discovered clues into how depression works and ways to effectively treat it.

After giving SAMe and an antidepressant to patients suffering from depression, it was found that there was an 36% improvement rate compared to an improvement rate of only 18% to those who received a placebo and the antidepressant.

In addition, the study showed that 26% of the patients taking SAMe experienced a total remission of depression compared to just 12% in the placebo group.

This suggests that antidepressants may not be the only solution for treating depression.
