Heart Attack Patients at Increased Risk of Cardiac Damage with Anemia Drug

Heart attacks can lead to additional medical complications that may result in an individual seeking Social Security disability benefits.

Health Day reports that heart attack patients are at an increased risk of cardiac damage with use of an anemia drug.

Erythropoietin alfa is a well-known type of anemia drug that is sometimes given in order to stimulate red blood cells. Popular brands of this drug include Epogen and Procrit. In some studies, it has been suggested that it can help reduce damage from a heart attack and even improve the heart’s function.

New findings indicate that greater caution needs to be made when determining if a patient should be given this type of drug. While it can be helpful, there may be some cases where it could actually be harmful.

A study done on heart attack patients provided some with a placebo and others with a type of anemia drug. There were 5 patients who suffered severe problems such as blockage in the stent that was placed inside during angioplasty, a second heart attack or death.

Anemia drugs have already been linked to other health risks such as tumor growth, stroke, heart failure and death. This has led the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to put stricter guidelines on the use of these drugs in cancer patients.
