Report Reveals More Than 300,000 Veterans May Have Died Waiting for VA Healthcare Treatment

Posted on September 4, 2015 by Disability Help Group

Recently, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) launched an investigation regarding alleged mismanagement of its Veterans Health Administration’s (VHA) Health Eligibility Center (HEC). The HEC is the central authority regarding eligibility and enrollment for VA healthcare services.

Through extensive investigations and audits of the application files, the VA found that there were approximately 867,000 pending veteran records, but the investigation was unable to determine which of those records were enrollment applications. The investigators recommended that new guidance and plans be put into action to correct data integrity so data can be properly classified.

As for the allegation that many of the veterans with pending health care applications had died while waiting for health care, the investigation found that approximately 307,000 of the pending VHA enrollment records belonged to veterans who were listed by the Social Security Administration as deceased. Due to the same limitations of the current record classification system, the investigation was unable to verify that the deceased veterans passed away while waiting for health care services.

VA Enrollment Services Mired With Problems – Don’t Get Lost in the System

The VA has been facing accusations of unacceptable waiting times for clinic appointments and hospital care for several years. This report, which can be read in its entirety on the VA’s website, has shed some light on the poor quality and limitations of the enrollment services data systems. Currently, there is little a veteran can do in order to verify his or her pending applications for health services, let alone expedite approval of care.

The Disability Help Group is looking to change the way our veterans are treated by the VA. In addition to problems securing healthcare, some vets have run into problems getting approved for disability benefits.

Our advocates are working tirelessly to ensure that every veteran who is eligible for VA disability benefits gets them in a timely and reasonable manner. If you are a U.S. veteran with a discharge status other than dishonorable and have a service-related disability, you may be eligible for benefits. Contact us online or call us at 1-(800)-800-3332.
