Social Security Administration Expanding Field Office Hours to Better Assist Public
With Congress’ approval of the 2015 fiscal year budget, the Social Security Administration (SSA) has announced that field offices across the nation will stay open longer hours. This effort is to bring the field offices back to the full operational status seen before budget cuts required the offices to cut back on hours and staff last year.
Effective March 16, 2015 field offices will be open for an additional hour in the evenings on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. All offices that currently close at noon on Wednesdays will continue to do so in an effort to allow employees to catch up on work and further eliminate the claim backlog.
Most offices will be open until 4 p.m. on all days but Wednesday. This is yet another effort to rebuild the field offices after years of budget cuts and staffing losses. In 2014, the staffing losses started to turn around as staff were added to field offices. Now with the addition of four more hours per week, the SSA hopes to be able to serve more claimants and process more claims.
Waiting in line at Social Security field offices is not necessary for many services such as submitting claims for Social Security disability benefits. A disability associate can help reduce the amount of personal contact and work that you will have to do with the Social Security offices.
